Francis Casey Alcantara’s grass court campaign has kicked off with a good start at the AEGON International Junior Tennis Championships-Roehampton 2009.
Alcantara won his first round singles match at the Grade 1 tournament held in London, Great Britain, according to a report on the International Tennis Federation website (ITFtennis.com).
The 17-year-old Filipino netter from Cagayan de Oro City fought off American Tennys Sandgren, the 11th seed, in three sets.
Alcantara claimed the first set, 6-4. Sandren won the second set tiebreak, 6-7(4), to force a decider. Alcantara then cruised to victory with 6-2 in the final set.
He will face Briton James Chaudry in the second round.
The AEGON International Junior Tennis Championships, a tune-up event for Wimbledon, started on June 21 and will run until June 26.
Wimbledon kicks off on Monday, June 22, for the professional tennis players. The juniors, including Alcantara, will play at the All England Club beginning June 27.
Before his grass court campaign, Alcantara won his fifth doubles title of the year on German clay with Chinese Taipei partner Liang-Chi Huang.
His other doubles titles were won in events held in Belgium, the Philippines, and Malaysia. He won his first doubles title of the year at the Australian Open with Cheng-Peng Hsieh of Chinese Taipei.
