Cagayan de Oro’s Lennon Hart Salgados salvaged a draw against 7th-seed Nguyen Duy Dien of Vietnam in the 6th round to remain unbeaten in the ongoing 10th Asean age-group chess championships in Hue, Vietnam.
However, Salgados’ title bid was imperiled after Filipino compatriot National Master Alcon John Datu lost to top-seeded Nguyen Van Hai of Vietnam going into the final round. His draw only boosted Van Hai’s quest for the 16-under title in standard chess competition.
Salgados, a 15-year-old find from Corpus Christi School, earlier picked up his 3rd win by ripping Malaysia’s Edward Lee Kim Han in the 5th. The unrated young Salgados (4.5 pts) now faces compatriot NM Datu in the final round.
Salgados’ CDO-Misor fellow Tristan Frech Ibaoc, meanwhile, finally registered his first victory in the 10-under category after 4 straight draws and 1 loss. Ibaoc, also from Corpus Christi School, defeated Vu Hai Duc of Vietnam to improve to 3 points and a share of 15th to 22nd place.
The lean but mean 25-strong RP delegates are campaigning in the prestigious Asean Youth Championships under the mentorships of Grandmaster Buenaventura “Bong” Villamayor and International Master Idelfonso Datu with NCFP tournament director Willy Abalos and NM Wilfredo Neri as team managers.
