Siblings Rafael and Roberto Miguel Jalnaiz, the 10 and 11 year old sons of Asian gold medalist Roberto “Bobby” Jalnaiz, both of Initao town, Misamis Oriental, took the gold medals in the 28 and 30 kilogram categories, respectively in the week-long 2009 Smart-ABAP Mindanao Area Boxing Tournament in Panabo City.
All in all, the Misamis Oriental boxing team bagged 10 medals, including three golds, to capture first runner-up honors overall behind host Davao del Norte.
MisOr’s third gold-medal feat came from a 12-year old Donil Maano of Balingasag town, after dominating the 31-kilogram field of young fighters.
Seven of Misor’s 15 fighters also reaped silver medals after bowing out only in their final matches, mostly on points.
The Silver medalists were the Basadre brothers, Daryl and Jason, of Sugbongcogon; Jeffrey Galero of Manticao; Klemen Gimena of Tagoloan; Alexis Lazarte of Opol; Warren Raterta of Gingoog City; and John Mark Toring of Manticao.
Other than the three golds and seven silvers, MisOr boxing team also took two bronze medals courtesy of Ronald Abid of Salay and Joselito Bajao of Sugbongcogon.
But three other boxers, Macre Gadiongco of Villanueva, Mark Galarrita of Alubijid and Andre Lachica of Balingasag, were not as fortunate as they were eliminated out of contention.
Governor Oscar S. Moreno, who is also the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) regional chairman for Northern Mindanao, congratulated all the members of the MisOr boxing team for bringing honors to the province.
Moreno also lauded the MisOr coaching team headed by Jalnaiz, together with team manager Ruel Densing and trainor Guilberto Basadre, for the impressive performance in a field of about 400 amateur boxers all over Mindanao, outscoring the boxing teams of North Cotabato and Davao City to second and third runner-up spots.
