The construction of the Laguindingan airport is 12% ahead of schedule as of today. This was the assessment made by Engr. Della Capicenio, Project Director and confirmed by the Korean consultant of Hanjin, the company building the project.
In a special tour of the premises for members of media, the officials showed the start of construction of the terminal building and the present leveling of the runway.
The runway will be 45 meters by 2,100 meters or 2.1 kilometers plus 300 meters safety area on both ends. This is good for an Airbus A320 and 319 presently used by local domestic airlines for domestic and regional flights.
Concreting of the runway is scheduled in Spetember but at the rate the project is goiung ahead of schedule this may be done earlier.
Originally the airport is scheduled for completion and operations by the 1st quarter of 2012. At the rate the project is going this may be fished by either the 4th Q of 2011 or even by the 3rd Q.
However, the runway may already be used by March of 2010 and this will first be used for take off and landing by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to inaugurate its use.
“The communications equipment will not be in place yetbut the planes can already use it using visual aids,” Capicenio explained.
This was confirmed by Gov. oscar Moreno who said that PGMA deserves the honor of using the runway first because she has always pushed the project even when she was still an undersecretary of the Department of Trade and Industry.
A 6 lane access road from the main highway is presently being concreted which will lead directly to the terminal building.
Meanwhile, the relocation of families affected by the project is on going with the construction of houses for the beneficiaries. Several houses are already occupied by the families and several more are still being worked on.
