The introduction of budget flights between this city and Cagayan de Oro should create a positive economic impact for both cities. For several years, the most efficient way to reach Cagayan de Oro from Davao is by land, which takes over six hours by private vehicle or up to eight hours by bus.
An option would be to take the Davao-Cebu route and transfer to a Cebu-Cagayan de Oro flight, which could take even longer and more expensive. Previous airline attempts to serve Davao and Cagayan de Oro, the latest of which was four years ago, were unsuccessful due to high costs.
But with the budget air fare, which is even lower than a premium bus ticket, the service would surely be a hit especially for budget conscious travelers as well as ageing and businessmen clients who require time-conscious.
The new low-fare flights, however, would unlikely render land transport service unprofitable. Many passengers would still prefer land travel which provides good views of Mindanao from the Davao-Bukidnon highway, and an insight into local economies along the way. Leaving Davao at 6 a.m. by bus means arriving 1 p.m. in Cagayan de Oro, an ideal check-in time.
Besides, travelers from this city would have to pay an additional P200 in airport terminal fee, making air travel more expensive compared to the bus fare. For business travelers, however, the early evening flights to and from Cagayan de Oro would be more practical since business meetings could be held the entire day and flying time is less than an hour.
