A four-hectare islet next to the island-province of Camiguin emerged as a favorite destination for Northern Mindanao during Lent, the regional office of the Department of Tourism noted.
Mantigue Island, a 30-minute motor boat ride from the town of Mahinog, has reported over 1,000 visitors last April 8 alone.
Mahinog Mayor Alex R. Jajalla said that this was the highest number of tourists registered by the town’s tourism unit compared to only a few dozen visitors in previous years.
Mr. Jajalla said municipal officials recorded 202 motor boat trips between Mahinog and Mantigue during the Holy Week. Mantigue is under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Mahinog.
The emergence of Mantigue as a tourism destination would have a positive economic impact for the town of Mahinog, he said, explaining that the island has been part of Camiguin’s eco-tourism plan.
Last year, local officials announced a program for the rehabilitation of the island’s ecosystem.
