Alexes Orias sank a 22-foot three-point shot at the buzzer as the Quezon Red Oilers stunned host Misamis Oriental Meteors, 65-64 and stole Game 1 in their best-of-5 semifinal series of the 2009 Liga Pilipinas Conference II at the Xavier University Gym.
Orias received a perfect inbounds pass from spitfire Robert Labagala at the top of the key from near midcourt, dribbled to the left flank, faked off one defender and hit the game winning 3-point shot over the outstretched arms of Joey Mente, silencing the partisan crowd. Earlier, MVP Candidate Mark Yee made a tough fall away from the baseline beating the shot clock to put the Meteors on top 64-62 with 5 seconds to play.
The game was tight throughout with several lead exchanges. The Meteors of Gov. Oscar Moreno and Coach Jun Noel tried to break the game open by erecting several 7-point leads midway through the 2nd half but the Red Oilers always came roaring back behind Ramsey Williams and Robert Labagala and finally took the lead 61-60 with less than 2 minutes of play. Game 2 is again set tonight at the Xavier University Gym with the Meteors hoping to bounce back.
